A fantastic story on the Beneteau First 44.7 - Big Kahoona

• Time spent: Construction of the model started in November 2008 and took 6 months to complete (I worked out that it took just on 1,000 hours) • Scale: It it 1:25 scale • Interesting points: The model is constructed out of 2 different full model kits, and hundreds of individually purchased and hand made pieces (sourced mainly from specialty suppliers and from overseas). The coloured cord for the sheets and halyards was researched and ordered specifically to match the real Big Kahoona. All wire stays and railings are miniature stainless steel cable. The base was hand constructed by a local trophy maker, and the perspex case was specially constructed for this model in Canberra by the company that makes all of the display cases for The Australian National Museum, The Australian War Memorial, The National Art Gallery, The National Library, and Old Parliament House. Hundreds of detailed images of Big Kahoona were taken to use as a reference to make the model 100% accurate down to the finest detail. After sharing my idea with the crew, it was met with an extremely positive and supportive response. Over the 6 months of it's construction I kept the crew updated with images of it's progress, with all of this was kept under wraps and remained a secret from the owners Steve and Connie. It was discussed amongst the crew and it was agreed that at the RMYC Summer Racing Series Presentation Night we would present it to Steve and Connie. (Which worked out even better when Big Kahoona became club champion, again). This model was presented to Steve and Connie from all the crew of Big Kahoona in appreciation for everything they have given and have done. Another big personal thanks from myself to the whole crew for the considerable financial support with the construction of this model and for keeping this surprise a secret over that time. When it was finally presented, the look on Steve and Connies faces were priceless.
